Super Blooms and Spring Research Opportunities

Spring is finally here after a rainy and cold winter in the Piedmont of the deep south. The azaleas, cherry trees, and dogwoods are beautiful, but they pale in comparison to the super bloom of wildflowers in California. Speaking as a native Californian, I am glad the drought is over, but frequent rain in Georgia is getting tiresome. As a girl, I remember taking a weekend drive with my parents and grandparents to see the flowers. I don’t remember the year or where we went, but I remember the car(s). It was either the 1961 Plymouth (push buttons instead of a gear shift) or the 1964 Ford Fairlane. That was a long time ago. Perhaps that trip started me on my career as a plant biologist.

Since I am a plant scientist, I have a soft spot for all kinds of plant research, including conservation efforts. Check out a few plant science and conservation opportunities below through the link. I spend my days writing, editing, and reviewing many kinds of science-grant proposals and other documents, including those on biomedical research for my clients. A few of those are there too, along with a variety of fellowships. By no means is this a complete list. I deliberately left out smaller regional opportunities just to keep it manageable.

Research Grant Writing Tip

Ask yourself this question:  How would I present my research to an introductory college class of the same or similar topic? Students in introductory classes are not experts.  Your answer will help tailor your writing to the reviewers, who are mostly not experts in your precise area of research.  I touched on this idea in an earlier blog post and it is something I should expand on in the near future.

Reminder

It is not too early to get started on an NSF Career Proposal with a July due date or the new versions of the NIH-R15. Check out my guide, Secrets of Successful NSF Career Proposals, which I summarized from a dissertation in communications that analyzed these awards.  Use the contact form to reach me about my grant proposal review services.  You can sign up to receive The Grant Science Journal too.
