Peer Review, Editing, & Consulting

Peer Review

Most grant proposals need a thoroughly scientific, peer, organizational, and editorial review before submission. If you need an external peer review of a proposal, The Flat Fee Review for $750.00 should meet most of your needs as it is for academics and others who need a quick, no-hassle second opinion or review of a research grant proposal or a similar document. Pricing includes scientific peer review and deep editorial reviews of the narrative portions of the proposal. Suggestions for rewriting, reorganization,  grammatical improvements, and how to tell a good research story are the core features of this service. Any suggested editorial changes will appear in the document using track changes and comment features in Word. Review service pricing reflects the allotted time and depth of editorial, story, and scientific analysis for a typical federal agency research proposal with a narrative of 12-20 pages but includes important documents such as the project summary or specific aims and other narrative sections as required by the agency. The project description and supplemental narrative sections should be complete before the review. Please note that the review package does not include appendices or attachments to grant proposals. The estimated time from the document receipt to the completed review is 2-5 business days. All documents and communications are strictly confidential. Please use the contact form/page to reach me for more information. I invoice through PayPal but am open to other platforms.  Note:  A Rush Fee of $150 Applies to Proposals Received for Review 7 Days or Less from the Published Submission Date.

Scientific Editing

Journal articles for publication benefit from a deep editorial review for submission and resubmission.  Journal article editing is especially appropriate for non-native English speakers in the scientific community.  Like the Red Pencil Review above, edits appear in track changes and comment features in Word. The estimated time from the document receipt to the completed edit is 2-7 business days. All documents and communications are strictly confidential. Pricing for manuscripts and other documents is by the word ($0.06), not including references. Use my contact form/page for scientific editing inquiries.

Academic Consulting services fall into these broad areas:

Academic faculty,  postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students can always use more support on their career paths.  A mentor is part of that other support. Listed below are two types of personal mentoring plans. Please use the contact form/page to ask about either one.

Mentoring for the Academic Scientist – Learn from my experiences of success and failure as an academic life scientist, so you can be better prepared for your academic career.  Mentoring sessions will have an informal tone but are centered on balancing teaching, research, and service for those on, near, or d desire the academic career path.  Personal mentoring, tailored to your needs, will take place through calls, chats, other collaborative tools, and emails.

Individual Grant Proposal Mentoring – Not everyone has access to a grant-writing mentor. This is an intense program of personal mentoring around the grant proposal preparation and writing process.  This six to eight-week experience will take you from detailed dissections of the RFP and application guidelines to outlining, writing the sections, developing the budget, etc.  The mentoring plan will be tailored to the pertinent grant proposal and any personal needs. The plan will use weekly mentoring calls, email correspondence, file sharing, and other collaborative cloud-based tools.

Nonprofit, Business, and Other Consulting Services:

If your nonprofit or business has a basis in the life sciences or has a project needing life science expertise,
please ask about the following services using the contact page. Generally, grants to businesses are very rare.  Rare exceptions include initiatives in individual states through economic development offices and the federal scientific and technological SBIR/STTR program across many federal agencies. SBIR/STTR grant proposals follow the format of research proposals.

  • Review of the proposal drafts, existing documents, and other materials.
  • Editing of existing documents.
  • Research potential funding opportunities in various grant databases.
  • Evaluate potential grantmakers and nonprofits for the right fit.
  • Consult and Collaborate with other grant consultants for specific expertise through social media platforms.
  • Research Additional required information for proposal development.
  • Manage and Organize the proposal writing process according to the guidelines and submission dates.
  • Prepare grant proposal budgets.
  • Write full grant proposals, white papers, letters of intent or inquiry, and other documents.
  • Additional consulting areas of expertise include higher education, science education, and life science research.

As a member of the Grant Professionals Association, I ascribe to their code of ethics.
